Saviour Lutheran Church set out to be a warm and welcoming host by inviting nearby apartment and townhouse dwellers to take part in a giant Garage Sale on its property Saturday, May 16. Only thing missing … a garage! What was in abundance, though, were fabulous weather, interesting items for sale and good cheer.
There was no charge at all to reserve tables or enjoy refreshments during the 9 am to 2 pm event, which facilitated business both indoors and outdoors. Neighbourhood residents enjoyed selling their wares to browsers who assessed goods ranging from a rowing machine, clothing, knickknacks, tools and other “man” stuff like a baseball hat collection and fishing gear … to plants, jewelry, books and furniture accessories. Early bird customers got the action going right away, with the busiest commerce occurring between 8:30 and 9:30 am.
Many church members came to the sale, volunteering their help to make the day go smoothly for all. Some picked up a few bargains. They learned a lot and would be happy to host another sale for the benefit of their neighbours sometime in the future, seeing this as a good way to connect with the surrounding community.
Neighbourhood resident Gloria Laughlin feels that would be a great idea. She and others manning tables at the event found the atmosphere very friendly. “There was a lot of good camaraderie. It was fun and very worthwhile. Looking forward to doing this again.”
