“Garage-less” Garage Sale a Success for Appreciative Neighbours

Saviour Lutheran Church set out to be a warm and welcoming host by inviting nearby apartment and townhouse dwellers to take part in a giant Garage Sale on its property Saturday, May 16. Only thing missing … a garage! What was in abundance, though, were fabulous weather, interesting items for sale and good cheer.

Garage SaleThere was no charge at all to reserve tables or enjoy refreshments during the 9 am to 2 pm event, which facilitated business both indoors and outdoors. Neighbourhood residents enjoyed selling their wares to browsers who assessed goods ranging from a rowing machine, clothing, knickknacks, tools and other “man” stuff like a baseball hat collection and fishing gear … to plants, jewelry, books and furniture accessories. Early bird customers got the action going right away, with the busiest commerce occurring between 8:30 and 9:30 am.

Many church members came to the sale, volunteering their help to make the day go smoothly for all. Some picked up a few bargains. They learned a lot and would be happy to host another sale for the benefit of their neighbours sometime in the future, seeing this as a good way to connect with the surrounding community.

Neighbourhood resident Gloria Laughlin feels that would be a great idea. She and others manning tables at the event found the atmosphere very friendly. “There was a lot of good camaraderie. It was fun and very worthwhile. Looking forward to doing this again.”

What is Epiphany?

Christmas is over, the new year begun.  The church celebrates Epiphany near the start of January, but what exactly is Epiphany?  We use the word as a description of some personal revelation that we experienced, a great revealing of something life changing.  Epiphany in the church celebrates the visit of the wise men, when the baby Christ was revealed to them and King Herod as the future Saviour and King.  On Epiphany we also focus on Christ’s baptism, as the boy from Nazareth is revealed as God’s own Son.  Watch this video from Concordia Publishing House to learn more about Epiphany:
